Bev Lewis Center
for Women's Athletics
The first athletic building
purpose-built to the needs of female student-athletes at the University
of Arkansas, the Bev Lewis Center for Women's Athletics represents a hallmark
in the history of both the University and the state.
Made possible by the lead gift of Bob and Marilyn
Bogle, the Bogles had only one request. The name of the proposed Center
for Women's Athletics reflect the accomplishments of the University's
longtime coach and Women's AD Bev Lewis.
As a result, the gift help create one of the finest
training facilities in the nation for female college athletes.
Construction began in December 2001 with site preparation.
Portions of the facility opened during January and February of 2003 with
the formal dedication on April 9, 2003.
The Lewis Center is composed of three major areas:
the strength and conditioning facility, the Gym'Backs training complex
and locker room and the administrative offices of the Women's Athletics
Department. It also has two major levels -- the Stadium Drive Level which
opens to the east onto Stadium Drive and the Barnhill Arena Level which
opens to the west at the ground level of Women's Athletics' other major
venue and office area, Barnhill Arena.
The Lady Razorbacks' 7,000-square foot strength and conditioning
area is the heart of the Women's Athletics Department. Filled with state-of-the-art
equipment scaled to the physical needs of female athletes, the training
area is housed in a unique, uplifting space. Designed to accentuate training
regimes, the Lewis Center weight room is where the foundation is built
for each Lady Razorbacks' success in competition. Located on the Stadium
Drive level of the facility, the weight room enjoys views in all directions.
The Barnhill Level of the Lewis Center is the location
of the Gym'Back training complex. Starting with a 15,000-square foot custom
designed training area, the training area is considered one of the finest
in collegiate gymnastics. Next door to the workout area are locker rooms
for the Gym'Backs, coaches' offices and support areas, including a full-service
athletic training room. For more on the Gym'Backs training complex, jump
to the gymnastics facility page.
Rounding out the Lewis Center are offices on both
the Stadium and Barnhill levels for administration and coaches. On the
Stadium Drive Level is the location of the main office of the Women's
Athletics Department, including Women's Athletic Director Bev Lewis and
her associate athletic directors. On the Barnhill Arena Level has the
Lady'Back basketball coaches offices.
