Soccer Sets Fall Schedule
FAYETTEVILLE - University of Arkansas head soccer coach Gordon Henderson announced his 2004 schedule on Thursday and is excited about the possibilities that lay ahead for his young team in the fall.
Henderson and his staff assembled a 19-game campaign featuring eight home contests. The slate was altered slightly from its original form after the Southeastern Conference elected to start an 11-game conference schedule.
"I'm very excited about the change in the SEC schedule," Arkansas head coach Gordon Henderson said. "Now we will have a true league champion. In previous years you didn't play two teams and that may have been to some team's advantage.
"I think that this fall is an important season for us. We have a strong group of women who are dedicated to achieve both on and off the field. We are trying to create a culture of success and that won't come by accident. We need to lay the foundation this year to become one of the premier teams in the Southeastern Conference. This schedule is anything hut easy, but it will make us better."
The Lady Razorbacks begin the season on the road in Cape Girardeau, Mo., against the Southeast Missouri State Ohtakians on Aug. 27. The two squads have met one time prior to the 2004 match up with Arkansas taking the game, 2-1, at Lady'Back Field in 2002. At the time, Southeast Missouri was the defending Ohio Valley Conference champions and had just come off their first-ever trip to the NCAA Championship tournament.
Arkansas returns to Fayetteville for a three-game home stand against regional rivals Tulsa, Southwest Missouri and Oklahoma to open the schedule at Lady'Back Field. Sunday afternoon, Aug. 29, marks the home opener for the Lady'Backs as they face Tulsa in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. Southwest Missouri returns to Fayetteville on Friday, Sept. 3, followed by Big 12 powerhouse Oklahoma on Sunday, Sept. 5.
Arkansas goes back on the road for a mid-week contest at Oral Roberts University on Tuesday, Sept. 7, before making its way to Huntsville, Ala., for the Alabama A&M Tournament where the Lady Razorbacks are scheduled to face Grambling and Southern in Friday and Sunday contests. The Lady'Backs conclude a four-game road trip with a match against Colonial Athletic Conference power Old Dominion on Sunday, Sept. 19.
The Lady Razorbacks open their SEC season at home on Friday, Sept. 24, when they hope to extend their two-match winning streak against Vanderbilt in a 7:00 p.m. contest. Vanderbilt's last trip to Fayetteville produced what is arguably the greatest comeback in Arkansas soccer history as the Lady'Backs scored three times in the final 10 minutes of play to claw out a 4-3 victory. Arkansas' SEC opening series wraps up with Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.
Another four-match road series greets the Lady Razorbacks as they travel to the SEC's defending Eastern and Western division champions on consecutive weekends. Arkansas' first trip is to the Magnolia State where they face the Miss State Bulldogs on Friday followed by the Western Division champion Ole Miss Lady Rebels on Sunday afternoon. Arkansas then faces Eastern Division and overall SEC champion Tennessee the following Friday, Oct. 8, before concluding the four-game run with a match again Georgia on Sunday.
Returning home, Arkansas faces a tough Auburn squad that is coming off a trip to the NCAA Championships on Friday, Oct. 15, before taking on a notoriously tough and gritty Alabama team on Sunday. The following weekend splits Arkansas' schedule between Fayetteville and Gainesville, Fla. The Lady Razorbacks take on South Carolina on Friday, Oct. 22, then jet-set down to Gainesville for a match with the Gators on Sunday.
The Lady Razorbacks conclude their regular season on Friday evening, Oct. 29 against SEC Western Division rival LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
