Named Regional Athlete of the Year
FAYETTEVILLE - Junior Veronica Campbell added
another honor to her growing list of accomplishments on Thursday when
she was named the USTCA South Central Region Athlete of the Year for the
University of Arkansas Lady Razorback track team.
Campbell, one of six Lady Razorbacks that
are scheduled to compete at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend,
is the top ranked 200-meter runner in the country and the world this season
and is currently second in the NCAA for 60 meters. An international caliber
athlete, Campbell has consistently displayed her talents on the track
this winter, setting three Lady Razorback school records, nearly eclipsing
the collegiate record and destroying the Southeastern Conference Championship
"Veronica is a special athlete," Arkansas
associate head coach Rolando Greene said. "I've said this before, and
I'll continue to say it, she can do whatever she puts her mind to. I can't
wait to see her compete every time she steps on the track."
The regional athlete of the year honor is
Campbell's first. The last Lady Razorback to accomplish the task was former
distance star Lilli Kleinmann who took the award in the winter of 2000.
Campbell now goes on to a national ballot with the other nine regional
athletes of the year for national athlete of the year consideration. Voting
for the national award takes place following the NCAA Championships this
