Lady'Backs welcome Wiechman for 2004 season
FAYETTEVILLE -- Jonesboro, Ark., volleyball player Ashley Wiechman signed a letter of acceptance to enroll at the University of Arkansas for the 2004 season.
"We feel very fortunate to have someone of Ashley's talent join the program," said head coach Chris Poole. "Ashley's volleyball coach, Margie McGee, is a former player of mine at Arkansas State. Margie is one of the best defensive players I have ever had the pleasure of coaching and is still listed second in career digs for a Division I player. I know what type of training Ashley has had with her defense and passing and I feel certain that she will contribute at a high level to our program."
Wiechman was four-time all-conference, three-time all-state tournament and two-time all-state in volleyball for the Valley View Blazers in Jonesboro. As a senior, she was a Wendy's High School Heisman nominee and state finalist as well as Rotary International "Super Senior." Weichman was also a National English Merit award winner and named an Outstanding Student of America.
In addition to volleyball, Wiechman was a four-time member of Who's Who Among American High School Students and of Who's Who Among American High School Athletes. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the Blazer Honor Roll.
Wiechman was also active off the court with Special Olympics, March of Dimes, Read Across America, peer tutoring, the National Council on Diabetes and volunteered for several other organizations.
Wiechman, along with fellow incoming freshman Kelli Cole, is slated to participate for the West All-Stars and will compete in Barnhill Arena this summer.
"We will have four young ladies from the state of Arkansas on the roster this fall," said Poole. "All four of them have attended our volleyball camps in the past and have grown up wanting to be Lady Razorbacks. It's exciting for our staff to see the improvement in volleyball in Arkansas over the last 10 years and we plan to continue making Arkansas and the region a priority with our recruiting."
The University of Arkansas volleyball team returns to the court in early August for preseason drills. For more information about Arkansas volleyball log on to
